  • Daniel Livingstone and Mark D’Angelo, ‘Livingstone’, are a singer/song writing duo who have just been signed to Warner Music worldwide on a complete 360 deal. The pair met on a friend’s project and through their mutual love and admiration of jazz and classical music, collaborated to write a song together. The result was an uncategorisable mix of pop coupled with electronic beats, smooth and enticing vocals with R&B elements. From this chance collaboration, Daniel and Mark seem to have found their musical match in each other forming ‘Livingstone’. Now producing, recording and mixing in their own studio, ‘Livingstone’ are currently writing their first album and have their sights set on the big bright lights of the world stages!

  • Duluth, Minnesota’s undisputed champion of blues and folk, Charlie Parr returns with a new album, ‘When The Devil Goes Blind’, the first ever Charlie Parr album to be recorded with a producer, Bo Ramsey, a journeyman musician and producer best known for his work with Lucinda Williams, and his first time recording in an actual studio, Wild Sound in Minneapolis. A character like no other, Parr was raised on Alan Lomax field recordings and his father’s first-hand accounts of the Depression and riding the freight trains. Charlie shows up with a lived-in rasp of a voice, National resonator and 12-string acoustic guitars, a banjo and a batch of his own songs with a library of songs up his sleeve by Mississippi John Hurt, Charley Patton and other cohorts from another time if the mood takes him. Charlie will be in Australia for shows in September/October performing songs from the new album.   • Sydney foursome The Holidays’ debut album, Post Paradise, may have been a long time coming, but it has categorically been worth the wait. The first two singles, Moonlight Hours and Golden Sky, hinted at the exciting musical re-birth this band has taken over the past 18 months, yet do not exclusively define the depths of this blissful musical journey. Formed in 2007, the band quickly made their mark on the Australian musical landscape. The release of two EP’s at opposite ends of 2008 saw them scoring Triple J rotation, share stages with The View, Jamie T, The Temper Trap & Little Red, and regularly name-checked as one of the nation’s most promising new acts before bunkering down to prepare their long-player. However, it wasn’t until the single earned the quintet the triple j Unearthed gong (landing them a spot on Homebake’s stage) that just how much of a gem this band was became apparent. Their live show takes the band to another plane. The songs presented on debut EP ‘With Emperor Antarctica’ pack a bigger punch when taken to the live forum. The honesty in each member’s voice is heightened, the emotion makes chests swell and the story in each song resonates somewhere between the heart and stomach. Prior to their recent touring stint with Mumford & Sons and Splendour In The Grass, the band had a good month off the road to bunker down and write. The national tour will see the fruits of this writing time, with the band planning to bring some of these new songs to stage, along with their live staples from EP ‘With Emperor Antarctica’.

  • Mistletone presents The Field for the first time in Australia, featuring Stockholm native and blessed-out futurist Axel Willner with his live rhythm section. Launched unto the world by renowned German label Kompakt in 2005, The Field expounded a new fusion of ambient and techno which was informed as much by the shoegazer rock of Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine as by the aesthetics of Kompakt and 1990s techno (post-pop ambient, anyone?). Following a cherished 12″ debut and a remix of Annie’s My Heartbeat that leapt onto the web, The Field became a blogosphere cult favourite and remains so to this day. The Field’s debut album From Here We Go Sublime was one of 2007’s most talked about and universally praised releases; the BBC called it ‘one of those rare albums that makes you wonder how you ever got by without it’, and Pitchfork bestowed a mighty 9.0 rating, declaring: ‘If Willner doesn’t hit at least some of your pleasure centres, your nerve endings might actually be dead.’ Non-stop touring around the world ensued with !!!, LCD Soundsystem, The Juan MacLean and others. In 2008, Willner grew weary of performing alone, and The Field has now evolved into a three piece band, bringing a completely new depth and voracity to their live performances. Last year saw the release of the acclaimed Yesterday & Today which continued The Field’s oblique sampling strategy while building up the rhythmic architecture; the title track featured a collaboration with Battles drummer John Stanier. Ever since he startled the world with From Here We Go Sublime, Willner has been much in demand as a remixer, with tracks from Thom Yorke to Battles to Maps raising his profile, so that now legions are gathered, in the spit-shined airport terminal of their dreams, waiting for their blessed-out departure.

The space has a 16 channel mixing desk, a self contained PA… AND IS OPEN TO ANYONE… punk, indie, noise, country, hardcore, electronic, folk, hip-hop… whatevs!! We know this fair city of ours has an amazing abundance of new musical talent just waiting for the chance to explode onto the live scene, and that’s where The Emergency Room comes in to offer a helping hand!

The Emergency Room is most suitable for a group of artists looking to develop those invaluable live performance skills without blowing the budget. ER shows are typically held on Monday nights, can feature anything from two (2) to four (4) bands, and generally run from 8:00pm – 10:30pm, with doors opening at 7:30pm. ER shows offer door entry only and artists should provide their own sound mixer for the night (ideally the same person should do the whole night!)

Tram

Trams number 1 and 8 run frequently (about every ten minutes or more often) from Swanston Street in the city through Carlton to East Brunswick. Trams stop immediately outside the venue – tram stop 123 at the pedestrian crossing, one stop past Glenlyon Road.

How do I purchase tickets to a show?

Tickets can be purchased online at any time via the East’s website. Alterntively you can purchase tickets over the phone by simply calling 03 9388 9794 and following the prompts through to the box office, or you can visit our friendly box office staff in person at the Corner Box Office, 57 Swan Street Richmond (box office hours Monday – Saturday, 11:00am-8:00pm)

Can I smoke at The East Brunswick Club?

The band room and front bar are smoke free zones! There is however a beer garden where you can smoke all year round!

Is the band room seated or standing?

All shows at the East are general admission and standing room only unless otherwise specified.

Does the venue have wheelchair access?

The East is wheelchair accessible from both the front bar and band room entrances. The East is also Companion Card friendly.

Why can’t people under 18 attend shows?

The legal requirments of our liquor license dictate that persons under the age of 18 years are not permitted entry to the venue.

What do I do in the event of a lost ticket?

Once tickets have been distributed they are solely the responsibility of the purchaser. We are unable to re-issue tickets regardless of method of purchase. Tickets should be treated like cash and are not replaceable.

Will I be allowed entry without ID?

No ID, No entry, No Service is the policy at the East. Please ensure you have your ID with you any time you visit a licensed premises. The following are accepted forms of identification:

Kicking off each week at 7.30pm, the trivia consists of three rounds – 1. Music, 2. Film & TV, 3.Trashy Pop Culture. Throughout the evening your adorably foul mouthed hosts give away jugs of beer, and the top prize at the end of the evening is a deliciously refreshing cold slab!

We’ll also throw in $12 parmas – after all, you need to keep your energy levels up as you answer questions about your favourite flicks, the history of rock ‘n’ roll and perhaps most importantly, the filthy, seedy and thus incredibly fascinating sex lives of C-grade celebrities.
