Horrorshow are two 21 year old inner west Sydneysiders: Adit produces the Music, Solo handles the vocals. Attending Fort Street High School, whose musical output includes Josh Pyke, Unkle Ho from The Herd and Joelistics from TZU, amongst others, both Solo and Adit were heavily involved in bands, ranging from jazz through to rock. Along with fellow school mates and current peers Spit Syndicate, they embraced hip hop as the genre made big strides in Australia around 2000. At only 19 years of age, Horrorshow started recording material more purposefully resulting in a collection of songs titled The Grey Space. It was not until 2008 that these caught the ear of Elefant Traks on the strength of a growing buzz and strong recommendations and The Grey Space was subsequently released August 16th 2008. Since then the demand for these guys has continued to grow, with the band supporting The Herd across the eastern states and then national tours with both Hermitude and Muph & Plutonic. In between, there was a sold out launch party (Annandale Hotel), support slots with Blackalicious as well as a spot on Sydney’s sold out Big Day Out. Having officially solidified their position within the Aussie hip-hop realm, don’t miss your chance to see Horrorshow this September at the East.

Australian-based musician Jeff Lang has earned worldwide acclaim as a virtuosic guitarist, a dynamic songwriter and a startlingly unique live performer. With a back catalogue of 14 studio albums, Jeff has been featured at major festivals, pubs, clubs, arts centres and venues internationally for the past decade. Blending rock, roots, folk, blues, ballads, instrumentals, improvisation and a devastatingly high level of musicality, Jeff Lang is a singularly unique performer in our world. Having built up a devoted, almost cult-like, following with his live performances and working without a set list, allowing the unique energy of each night to shape the songs and take the audience along for the ride, Lang has seen word of mouth bloom into a successful career. With achievements and awards throughout his career including six ARIA award nominations, as well as his win in 2002, it is widely acknowledged that Jeff Lang is an extraordinarily individual musician. What enhances his unique nature is his steadfast adherence to a prolific and diverse musical palette and output. A songwriter, a collaborator, a virtuosic guitarist and a stunning lyricist, Jeff Lang crafts songs as novella – rich with depth and vision, yet with an open breath for individual interpretation.

Daniel Livingstone and Mark D’Angelo, ‘Livingstone’, are a singer/song writing duo who have just been signed to Warner Music worldwide on a complete 360 deal. The pair met on a friend’s project and through their mutual love and admiration of jazz and classical music, collaborated to write a song together. The result was an uncategorisable mix of pop coupled with electronic beats, smooth and enticing vocals with R&B elements. From this chance collaboration, Daniel and Mark seem to have found their musical match in each other forming ‘Livingstone’. Now producing, recording and mixing in their own studio, ‘Livingstone’ are currently writing their first album and have their sights set on the big bright lights of the world stages!

A character like no other, Parr was raised on Alan Lomax field recordings and his father’s first-hand accounts of the Depression and riding the freight trains. Charlie shows up with a lived-in rasp of a voice, National resonator and 12-string acoustic guitars, a banjo and a batch of his own songs with a library of songs up his sleeve by Mississippi John Hurt, Charley Patton and other cohorts from another time if the mood takes him. A stunning document of Kes Band’s current and undeniable incarnation as a trio featuring KES (Karl E Scullin), Lehmann B. Smith and Julian Patterson, ‘Black Brown Green Grey White’ is a yin-yang dichotomy. Contemplative, melodic beauty and inward-gazing ballads are juxtaposed with jerky dischord, banshee yells and whirlwind anti-rock riffs. Compelling, uncompromising and beautiful, Kes Trio will surely hold you spellbound. Kyle Taylor’s music exhibits an array of acoustic styles and lyrically captures ‘topics of love, depression, hope, jealousy and triumph’. In any moment of happiness or grief, Kyle Taylor’s music is bound to stimulate the senses.

An extraordinary live performer, she performs in Australia with her full band for the first time in October. Having just completed a tour with Mark Lanegan’s Soulsavers, she drew rave reviews, garnering comparisons with everyone from PJ Harvey to Jim Morrison. Already many of the major labels are interested in her and this will definitely be one of those tours where in years to come you’ll be able to say ‘Yes, I saw Jonneine Zapata’s first Australian tour!’

But in the case of geetar-slinger and mighty-bearded vocalist Steve Merry and drumming prodigy Joel Battersby, the gushing is with good reason. Not so much making a name for themselves as branding it in the consciousness of punters nationwide, The Fumes have pursued a constant regimen of touring. Gaining respect from industry and a growing public they work equally well carving up blues festivals and headlining sold out rock venues.

Sydney foursome The Holidays’ debut album, Post Paradise, may have been a long time coming, but it has categorically been worth the wait. The first two singles, Moonlight Hours and Golden Sky, hinted at the exciting musical re-birth this band has taken over the past 18 months, yet do not exclusively define the depths of this blissful musical journey. Formed in 2007, the band quickly made their mark on the Australian musical landscape. The release of two EP’s at opposite ends of 2008 saw them scoring Triple J rotation, share stages with The View, Jamie T, The Temper Trap & Little Red, and regularly name-checked as one of the nation’s most promising new acts before bunkering down to prepare their long-player. Now, on the eve of its release, the band are set to hit the road, launching the album across the country. Joining The Holidays on tour is Papa Vs Pretty. Frontman Thomas Rawle alongside bandmates Tom Myers and Angus Gardiner are described as post-shoegaze, cherrypicking the best bits of ’60s and ’70s pop and peppering it with frantic guitar rock. Having just supported Surfer Blood on Splendour in The Grass side-shows the band have their debut EP Heavy Harm out now.

In their biggest tour yet, the Sydney five-piece will step onto stage in each state to celebrate the release of their third single ‘Blood To Gold’. To say the past year has been a whirlwind for Boy & Bear would not only be a cliche, but also an understatement. Since the band’s dulcet tones first hypnotized listeners across the radio waves in February 2009 Boy & Bear have found themselves in the spotlight. Their single ‘Mexican Mavis’ had the industry whispering and music fans clambering. However, it wasn’t until the single earned the quintet the triple j Unearthed gong (landing them a spot on Homebake’s stage) that just how much of a gem this band was became apparent. Their live show takes the band to another plane. The songs presented on debut EP ‘With Emperor Antarctica’ pack a bigger punch when taken to the live forum. The honesty in each member’s voice is heightened, the emotion makes chests swell and the story in each song resonates somewhere between the heart and stomach. Prior to their recent touring stint with Mumford & Sons and Splendour In The Grass, the band had a good month off the road to bunker down and write. The national tour will see the fruits of this writing time, with the band planning to bring some of these new songs to stage, along with their live staples from EP ‘With Emperor Antarctica’.

They are two of the most lauded up-and-coming indie acts to hit Australia this year, and this October Parades and Ernest Ellis are joining forces for a major national tour. It’s been a stellar year for Sydney outfit Parades. After performing at Homebake and supporting Gomez on a national tour, Parades released their debut album ‘Foreign Tapes’ this April 2010. The album received unanimous praise for its expansive, ambitious haze of pop harmonies, post rock guitars and electronic meanderings. Ernest Ellis has had an equally dramatic rise with his debut album ‘Hunting’ scoring five star reviews, selling out headline shows and performing at Splendour In The Grass. Recorded in a farmhouse in Orange using unique recording techniques, ‘Hunting’ has been described as an impeccable debut and a masterpiece! But it is in the live arena that these two acts really shine. Parades have impressed audiences across the country with their electrifying live shows, and Ernest Ellis’ haunting album takes on an entirely new dimension on stage, backed by a full rock band, the songs lift and build to towering crescendos.

Mistletone presents The Field for the first time in Australia, featuring Stockholm native and blessed-out futurist Axel Willner with his live rhythm section. Launched unto the world by renowned German label Kompakt in 2005, The Field expounded a new fusion of ambient and techno which was informed as much by the shoegazer rock of Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine as by the aesthetics of Kompakt and 1990s techno (post-pop ambient, anyone?). Following a cherished 12″ debut and a remix of Annie’s My Heartbeat that leapt onto the web, The Field became a blogosphere cult favourite and remains so to this day. The Field’s debut album From Here We Go Sublime was one of 2007’s most talked about and universally praised releases; the BBC called it ‘one of those rare albums that makes you wonder how you ever got by without it’, and Pitchfork bestowed a mighty 9.0 rating, declaring: ‘If Willner doesn’t hit at least some of your pleasure centres, your nerve endings might actually be dead.’ Non-stop touring around the world ensued with !!!, LCD Soundsystem, The Juan MacLean and others. In 2008, Willner grew weary of performing alone, and The Field has now evolved into a three piece band, bringing a completely new depth and voracity to their live performances. Last year saw the release of the acclaimed Yesterday & Today which continued The Field’s oblique sampling strategy while building up the rhythmic architecture; the title track featured a collaboration with Battles drummer John Stanier. Ever since he startled the world with From Here We Go Sublime, Willner has been much in demand as a remixer, with tracks from Thom Yorke to Battles to Maps raising his profile, so that now legions are gathered, in the spit-shined airport terminal of their dreams, waiting for their blessed-out departure.

Mistletone presents El Guincho, direct from Barcelona and touring Australia for the third time as a three piece led by one-man, space-age exotica party machine, Pablo Diaz-Reixa. El Guincho’s infectious, ecstatic tribal beats and Spanish language chants make it literally impossible to feel sad; the syncopated beats and eternal pop sunshine hits are the aural equivalent of warm beach breezes from Pablo’s native Canary Islands. Having charmed the socks off Australian audiences on previous touring jaunts here with Laneway Festival and Architecture in Helsinki, El Guincho returns hot on the heels of Pop Negro, the new album due on 10 September through Remote Control. Packed with upbeat, nostalgic pop jams for the beach, summer drives with friends and twilight BBQs, Pop Negro is another blissful world-beat pop excursion by El Guincho, joyously blending Afrobeat percussion and psych tropicalia. To quote Prefix magazine: ‘Steel drums, soaring Spanish vocals, guitars that clang like bells; the whole thing reads like a manual on how to make music to shake your arse to’. So rejoice, sun-seekers; here comes El Guincho and here comes summer, just when we need them the most!

ER shows offer door entry only and artists should provide their own sound mixer for the night (ideally the same person should do the whole night!)

TRIVIA TUESDAY
with hosts George H and Jess McGuire

After a short break over the “non-ratings” season, “So You Think You’re A Clever C*#@?” Rock and Pop Trivia is once again leading to madness and mayhem in the front bar of the East Brunswick Club on Tuesday nights.

.

Kicking off each week at 7.30pm, the trivia consists of three rounds – 1. Music, 2. Film & TV, 3.Trashy Pop Culture. Throughout the evening your adorably foul mouthed hosts give away jugs of beer, and the top prize at the end of the evening is a deliciously refreshing cold slab!

We’ll also throw in $12 parmas – after all, you need to keep your energy levels up as you answer questions about your favourite flicks, the history of rock ‘n’ roll and perhaps most importantly, the filthy, seedy and thus incredibly fascinating sex lives of C-grade celebrities.

EBC Trivia: Tuesday Nights
